Marco Island is the last big island before the coast dissolves into the Ten Thousand Islands, and it has a different feel from Naples proper. The beach is wider, the pace is slower, and the skyline of palm-shaded resort towers looks out over a long, calm, west-facing crescent of Gulf. You cross a single bridge, the air smells a little more of mangrove, and you have arrived somewhere that feels like its own place.
It suits families who want a pool, a beach and a kids' club all in one footprint; couples after a quieter beach than the city offers; and anyone who likes the idea of basing on an island but still day-tripping into town. Naples is a 20- to 30-minute drive north for the shops and dining of Old Naples, and the Everglades and Ten Thousand Islands sit right out the back door. Marco Island sits about 18 to 20 miles south of downtown Naples, a roughly 20- to 30-minute drive depending on traffic. That makes it easy to base on the island and still day-trip into Naples for shopping and dining, though you'll want a car to do it.
What are the main resorts on Marco Island?
The three big beachfront names are the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort (the large flagship), the all-suite Marco Beach Ocean Suites, and the Hilton Marco Island Beach Resort and Spa. When is the best time to visit Marco Island?
Winter and spring, roughly December through April, bring the warm, dry, sunny weather that defines high season, along with the highest rates and the biggest crowds. Late spring and fall are quieter and cheaper but hotter and wetter, with afternoon storms common in summer. Book early for any season-weekend stay.
